Abstract:

Around the Way Dog was a gourmet hot dog and hamburger restaurant created in a suburban college
town. This teaching case on the venture opens by tracking the difficulties in financing and structuring this
startup. After startup, the case presents typical growing pains of a restaurant: labor cost management,
production management, promotion of an unfamiliar brand name, and destructive partner conflict.
Despite a lack of comparable competitors and a seemingly small town environment, the case concludes
with a business on the brink of failure. A teaching note follows to guide discussion regarding issues such
as partner relationship management and undercapitalization.
